Henry Amend, Long-time Niobraran Dies

Henry F. Amend, 65, a rancher south of Lost Springs, died Friday, Dec. 18, at the Casper Hospital after being stricken with an aneurysm. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from the Peet Mortuary in Lusk with Rev. Robert Boutwell officiating. Harmony Lodge No. 24 of Lusk held Masonic rites at the mortuary and the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Ab DeCastro, organist, rendered an organ selection, "When the Roll is Called up Yonder."

Casket bearers were Wilbur Wright, Ted Pennington, Dan Dielman, Bebe Reed, Walt Reed, and Dick Keenan.

Honorary bearers were Barry Manning, Aubrey Manning, Bill Nuttall, Floyd Engebretsen, H. P. Klemke, Jess York, Jim Smylie, Wayne Bible, Walt Hoage, and Dale Radford.

He was born in Lincoln, Neb., September 9, 1905, to Henry and Anna Geiss Amend, who immigrated to Lincoln from Saratoff, Russia, in 1893. In 1908 the family came by railroad to Keeline where they lived on a homestead. He attended the Prairie View rural school. In 1927, he operated one of the first rotary wooden rigs in the Lance Creek Oil field.

He married Gladys Sims at Douglas, May 31,1930. He drilled wells in several fields in Wyoming until 1941 when he bought the Harry Card ranch one mile south of Lost Springs, later his parents homestead was added to his ranch. He resided here until his illness.

Ranching was his joy in life. He was an ardent fan of the Niobrara Roping Club, was a member of the Lusk Masonic Lodge and the American Sunday School Union at Lost Springs.

His parents, one brother, one sister, his wife and son Marvin died previously.

Survivors include his two daughters, Mae Ann Manning of Lost Springs, and Mary Engebretsen of Lusk, two sisters; Marie Cox of Cody and Emma Gaukel of Twin Falls, Idaho; a brother Fred of Cody, Wyo.; and three grandchildren.
