Jack L. Kettler

Memorial services for Jack L. Kettler, age 80, of Manville, were held at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds, on Feb. 15, 2003.

Jack Kettler died peacefully, with members of his family at his side at his second home in Cheyenne, on Feb. 10, 2003.

He was born in Manville, July 12, 1922, the son of Fred and Frankie (Grammar) Kettler.

He served his country in the military for 14 years, which included WWII and the Korean Conflict. He ran a pilot flight instrument school at Clovis, N. M., during the Korean Conflict; he always felt a deep sense of loss for the members of the Wyoming Air National Guard who died during that time.

He flew as a commercial pilot for Frontier Airlines for 31 years. Captain Kettler was a big man from Wyoming cowboy country, nevertheless, he was known by his fellow pilots, stewardesses and mechanics as a man with a gentle heart who was always considerate of his fellow man. Many of his real life adventures are contained in the book, The Golden Years of Flying, written by Jack's dear friend, Captain Tex Searle.

He served on the Manville town council and as Mayor for over 15 years. During his time as Mayor, he was instrumental in the establishment of an EPA compliant landfill, and water and sewage treatment systems for the town.

He is survived by his wife Betty Kettler of Manville; sisters, Fern Dieleman, Ila Johnson, and Joye Ray; a brother, Freddie Kettler; four sons, Jack Jr. of Denver, Colo., Keith of Littleton, Colo., William of Longmont, Colo., Ralph of Cheyenne; a daughter, Jeanne Kettler Mullennix of Sparks, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Bessie.
