Bertha Helena Klemke Owens

Funeral service for Bertha Owens, long-time Lusk area resident, was held at Peet Mortuary Chapel Monday, Dec. 27. The Rev. B. L. Anderson officiated at the service.

Mrs. Owens died at Niobrara Memorial Hospital Tuesday, December 21. She was born July 2, 1902, in Dodge County, Nebraska, the daughter of August T. and Anna Beck Klemke. She was raised on a farm east of Snyder, Neb., and was educated in St. Peter's Lutheran School there.

On April 1, 1924, she and Peter Owens were married in Snyder. She moved with her husband to Niobrara County after their marriage where they homesteaded northwest of Lusk.

Mrs. Owens was a long time member of Wieten-Dupes Post No. 4 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Royal Valley Club and was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Ruth Hahn was organist at the funeral service. Vocalists Kathy Doctor, Debra Akers, Debra Doctor and Patricia Fowler sang "Oh Come, Oh Come Emanuel" and "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were Quinn Heumier, Kester Akers, Joe Klemke, W. T. Bredthauer, Otto Krekeler, and Leonard DeGering.

Mrs. Owens is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Velma) Johnson, Guernsey, Mrs. Donald (Phyllis) Hoy, Marrison, Colo. and Mrs. William (Patty) Irving, Fall City, Ore.; one son, Robert of Lusk; four sisters, Meta Glandt, Lusk, Alma Brosius, Alvin, Tex.; Frieda Pasold, Beemer, Nebr. and Emma Alexander, Fort Morgan, Colo.; four brothers, Emil Klemke of Torrington, Elmer Klemke, Snyder, Alvin Klemke, South Sioux City, Nebr. and August Klemke, Wonder Lake, Ill.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete, her parents and three brothers.

Interment was in Lusk Cemetery. Memorial to the Heart Fund or St. Paul's Lutheran Church have been established.
