Valentine Pfister

Valentine Pfister, one of Eastern Wyoming's early settlers and a war veteran, passed away at his home in Lusk, Monday, Nov. 24, in his 86th year, surrounded by his wife, two sons and a number of grandchildren.

He was born in Wuerttemburg, Germany, on Feb. 7, 1828, and came to America in 1848, locating in Philadelphia. In 1850 he enlisted in the regular army of the United States and in the same year was engaged in fighting the Indians at Ash Hollow, near Fort Kearney, Neb. He was mustered out in 1855 and the following year was married to Miss Hannah Jane Pate, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Previously, in the year 1848, after his arrival in this country, he had gone south to join the army in the war with Mexico, but upon his arrival at the border he found that the war was over. In 1864 he enlisted in the volunteer army, becoming a member of Co. L, 11th Kansas Volunteers, and served his country well for eighteen months, after which he received an honorable discharge and for a number of years had been the recipient of a pension.

With his wife and two sons, John and Richard, all of whom survive him, he came to Wyoming in the year 1887 and took up ranching, in which work he was very successful. Several years ago he retired from active business and the ranch was looked after by his son Richard under the name of V. Pfister & son. For the past year or two he has lived most of the time at his town house, and it was here he passed peacefully away at a ripe old age. He was a man of a very kindly disposition, and numbered his friends by the score.

The funeral, which was largely attended, took place from St. Leo's church yesterday, with requiem high mass. Internment was made at Lusk.
