Last Rites For Art Whelan

Funeral services for C. Arthur Whelan, 73, were held Saturday from the Peet Chapel with burial in the Lusk Cemetery. Mr. Whelan died January 20 from a stroke.

The Rev. James Davis of the First Congregational Church and the Rev. Paul Hebbert of Casper officiated. Masonic rites were held at the graveside. Mrs. J. P. Watson was the organist. Mrs. G. L. Pfeifer sang "No Night There" and Mrs. Paul Hebbert sang "Beckoning Hands."

Pallbearers were: Gene Bass, Mike Cork, Henry Stiles, Cecil Tryon, Fritz Bruns, and Lavonne Pfeifer. Honorary pallbearers were: Lou Bass, Frank Bozart, E. M. Criss, Bill Kant, Levern James and Marvin Rasmusen.

Born in Indiana

Charles Arthur Whelan, son of William J. and Margaret Whelan, was born June 12, 1891 in Posey County, Indiana. He was one of a family of six boys and three girls, only one of whom survive him. He attended grade school in Stewartsville, Ind. and high school in Griffin, Ind.

The family moved to Wyoming in April 1909 and settled in the Jireh College community. In the fall of 1909 he went to work for pioneer rancher, H. B. Card, at the Lost Springs Ranch and later transferred to the home ranch at Manville where he served as foreman.

He was married May 9, 1917 to Clara P. Davis of Jireh. To them was born two daughters, Lena who survives and Waunita who died in infancy. He was prominent in business and political affairs in Niobrara County for many years.

Mr. Whelan was a life long member of the Christian Church and a member and Past Master of Roosevelt Masonic Lodge and member and Past Patron of Mariposa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving to mourn his loss are his wife, Clara P. Whelan, Lusk a daughter, Mrs. Lena Hebbert and grandson, Billy both of Chadron, a granddaughter, Mrs. Sandra Tomlinson of Stillwater, Okla., a sister, Mrs. Elsie A. Reed of Silver Springs, Md.

Hebbert and son, Billy, Chadron; Rev. and Mrs. George Hebbert and Rev. and Mrs. Paul Hebbert and family, Casper; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Cross, Cheyenne; Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Whelan and three daughters, Ft. Collins, Colo.; Mrs. Margaret Oliver and Mr. and Mrs. Allyn Wilson of Fort Collins.

Friends from away include; Mrs. Julia Tebbs, Casper; Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Bruns, Chadron; Mrs. Florence Korman, Crawford; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Fendrich and Mrs. Eva Tuchek, Hemingford, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Andy McGannon, Whitney, Neb.

C. Art Whelan Dies Monday; Funeral Saturday

C. Arthur Whelan, 73, a resident of Niobrara for 55 years, died of a stroke in Evanston Monday.

Funeral services will be held from the Peet Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Paul Hebbert of Casper, and step-grandson of Mr. Whelan, will assist the Rev. James Davis with the services. Masonic services will be held at the graveside if weather permits. If not they will be held at the Chapel.

Mr. Whelan came to Wyoming from Indiana in 1909 with his family who homesteaded south of Keeline. He served as deputy county assessor for a time in the 1920's and was elected county assessor first in 1926, a position he held until 1934. He established an insurance agency in Lusk after leaving the assessor's post and was active in that business until ill health forced his retirement.
