Lila O. Johnson

Services for Lila O. Johnson, age 93, were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Grimshaw officiating. Burial followed in the Lusk Cemetery.

Johnson died Thursday, May 17, 1990, at the Niobrara County Hospital in Lusk. She was born Oct. 28, 1896, in Northern Niobrara County, the daughter of Annie May and Frank W. DeCastro.

She attended a one-room school in the Old Woman Creek area until the family moved to Lusk in 1913 where she finished her education. For a number of years she worked as a waitress and at one time owned and operated her own restaurant, which she called "Lila's Waffle House." Later she was employed by Safeway where she remained for a number of years and finally crossed the street to work for Mr. Davenport who owned the Budget Food Market. Since retiring, she has made her home in Lusk living on property that has been in the family since 1917.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was faithful in her attendance at Sunday School and church.

Having spent her early years on a ranch, she learned to love animals and always had a pet, whether a horse, a lamb, a dog or a cat.

In 1913 she married Leroy Johnson who died in 1947. Other family members who preceded her in death are her parents, five sisters and three brothers. Research indicates that she married Clifford Sloan George on Oct. 6, 1914. He died Nov. 6, 1918. Le Roy Johnson's obituary indicates that he married Lila in 1925.

Survivors include two brothers: Dr. Addison DeCastro of Hay Springs, Neb.; and Chad DeCastro of Julesburg, Colo.; one sister, Ester Fancher of Scappoose, Ore.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

For those who wish, memorials to the First Baptist Church in Lusk will be appreciated by the family.

Peet Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
