Life-time Niobrara resident dies

Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at Peet Chapel for Mrs. Beecher J. (Helen) Strube.

Mrs. Strube, 69, died Friday at Natrona County Memorial Hospital in Casper following an illness of two months.

The Rev. Frank Bozart and Rebekah Lodge No. 12 conducted the service. Mrs. A. F. DeCastro, organist, accompanied Dawn Hicks and Carolyn Hammond as they sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden." Graveside service was conducted by the Lusk chapter of Order of Eastern Star.

Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Chambers, Lloyd Coleman, George Dixon, Dale Fernau, Harry Fernau Jr., Harry Fernau, Sr. Walt Fernau, Dale "Red" Henton, Richard Kant, Newton Kelly, Ike O'Neal, Lou Osborn, Bob Scott, Walter Schnorenberg, Sr., Fred Sheaman, Cooley Taylor, Bill Welch and Joe Vaughan.

Casket bearers were Pet Hansen, Richard James, George Jugler, Dan Mangus, Billy Mill and Kent McDaniel.

Helen Cook was born February 24, 1906, to Edmond A. and Christina Barbara Cook in Lusk. She attended schools at Hat Creek where she often had to ride to school on a pony and in Lusk. She attended college at the University of Wyoming and Chadron State College in Nebraska.

She taught school in Niobrara County schools for eight years.

She married Beecher Jay Strube April 26, 1931. They lived on a small ranch near Sage Creek until 1936 when they moved to Lance Creek. Mr. Strube worked for Continental Oil Company and Rocky Mountain Pipeline until his sudden death December 9, 1953, at the age of 45.

After the death of her husband Mrs. Strube worked for the Lance Creek grade schools as a cook. Her home was destroyed by fire in 1962 after which she moved to Lusk and resided with her mother.

In Lusk she was deputy county treasurer and deputy county assessor until she retired in November 1974.

Mrs. Strube was a past noble grand of Lusk Rebekah Lodge No. 12. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and received her 50 year pin this year. She also belonged to the Lusk Business and Professional Women's Club.

Survivors include two sons, Beecher (Ed), Casper and Martin, Gardnerville, Nev.; one daughter Mrs. William (Barbara) Sigler, Houston, Tex.; six grandchildren, Deborah, Devon, and Beecher, Casper and Lance, Scott and Mark, Gardnerville, Nev. and three step grandchildren Sheryl, Mark and Joni Sigler, Houston, Tex.; two step great-grandchildren, one brother, Edmond Cook, Hat Creek; one aunt, Mrs. Bertha Boyd, Lusk; one uncle George Mill, Hat Creek and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband and an infant daughter, Mary Lou died previously.

The family has announced that flowers or memorial contributions to the Niobrara Unit of the American Cancer Society or to the Niobrara Historical Society will be equally appreciated.

SADDENED BY DEATH
This community was saddened by the death of a long-time friend Helen Strube at the Casper Hospital. Helen was raised to young womanhood on the Cook family ranch in this valley. She was known and loved by her many years of kindness and service to all she knew. We extend out deepest sympathy to her family.
