Dorothy Gould Mill

Dorothy Gould Mill, 102, passed away on Jan. 10, 2012 at the Courtyard of Loveland Assisted Living Facility in Loveland, Colorado. She died peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness, having lived a rich and fulfilled life.

Dorothy was born June 6, 1909 in Memphis, Tenn. Her parents were Ina and Allen Gould; she was their only child. The family moved around a lot when she was young. She cherished the many happy summers spent at her grandparent's house in St. Joseph, Mich. overlooking Lake Michigan.

After completing her high school education she attended a business college in Chicago, Ill. She then decided to go west with her mother and moved to Lusk Wyoming to seek employment. It was there she met and married William Jacob Mill on Aug. 2, 1930.

During her adult lifetime she lived in Lusk, Yoder, Torrington and Casper, Wyo. She also lived in San Diego, Calif., Loveland, Colo. and Centennial, Colo.

She loved to travel, and did so extensively well into her 90's.

Her interests included books, reading and promoting literacy. She was a "self-taught" librarian and enjoyed her work as a Children's Librarian in Carnegie and public libraries in Torrington, Casper, and Loveland. In San Diego she drove the bookmobile for the Oceanside Branch in the 1950's. She was always ready to volunteer in local schools and libraries and did so in Centennial, Colorado at the Arapaho Public Library. She volunteered to help with a kindergarten class at Sarah Milner Elementary School in Loveland, and at Van Buren Elementary also in Loveland. She spent many years volunteering in the adult education program at Ferguson Alternative School and the Christian Science reading room in Loveland. She also did volunteer work for the Loveland Museum and Gallery.

On her 100th birthday the Mayor of Centennial, Colo. issued a proclamation declaring June 6, 2009 Dorothy G. Mill Day.

She loved conversing and corresponding with family and friends all over the world. She prided herself in sending out the earliest Christmas card of the year, and eagerly awaited the responses. At age 93 she embraced the 21st century and technology with her first computer. For several years she played games, surfed the web and kept in touch daily by email, but finally gave up her laptop computer at 99. She loved to knit and to crochet. Walking was always a favorite past time. She especially loved spending time with family and friends and their beloved pets.

In October of 2010 Dorothy moved to The Courtyard of Loveland, a wonderful and nurturing assisted living facility that she enjoyed immensely. While there she used the services of Halcyon, a local hospice with extremely caring and compassionate individuals.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents, husband William J. Mill, infant daughter Dorothy Ann, and a great grandson.

She is survived by her daughter Barbara Christensen of Centennial, Colo., son Bill and his wife Kim of Cheyenne, Wyo., and daughter Patricia Grieve of Green Valley, Ariz., as well as nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place under the supervision of the Neptune Society. At Dorothy's request no public memorial will be held. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date in the Lusk Cemetery, Lusk, Wyo.

Memorials may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.

Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 2690, Cheyenne, WY 82003.
