Ada Marie D. Vogel

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15th for Ada D. Vogel at the Congregational Church in Lusk at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Blish officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery. Mrs. Vogel passed away March 11th at the Coshing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas following a short illness.

Ada Marie DeGroot was born December 22, 1917 at Thermopolis, Wyoming the sixth child of a family of 11 children born to Maude Alice Maxon and Carl Everette DeGroot. The family lived in Shoshoni until September 1925 when they moved to Lusk. She received part of her elementary education here and graduated from Lusk High School in 1935 and attended the 50th reunion of her graduating class in Lusk last summer. She attended Barnes School of Business in Denver and later was employed by the Farm Security Administration.

On December 31, 1943 she and Arthur Franklin Vogel were married in Douglas, Wyoming. They became the parents of two children, Charles Arthur and Linda Marie. The family made their home in Lusk where Mrs. Vogel assisted her husband with the publishing of the Lusk Free Lance newspaper. Upon his death in March 1956, Mrs. Vogel and daughter, Gloria continued publishing the paper until February 1957 when the paper was sold to the Lusk Herald.

She was elected Niobrara County treasurer in 1958 and served in that capacity until October 19, 1962 when she was appointed postmaster at Lusk. She retired from this position November 29, 1985 and was honored with a retirement party, September 14th in Lusk. Since that time, she had been visiting at the home of her daughter Linda Baribeau and family near Leavenworth, Kansas.

Mrs. Vogel was baptized and became a member of the Congregational Church in Lusk in 1932. She served on the Youth Committee in 1963-64 and was financial secretary in 1964-65. She was a charter member of the Lusk Drove, B.P.O. Does No. 64, serving in various offices and was president several times; was a member of the Lusk Rebekah Lodge. No, 12, serving in all the chairs and being past noble grand. She transferred her membership to the Mountain Valley Rebekah Lodge No. 15 in Douglas last fall after the Lusk Lodge disbanded, being a member nearly 50 years. She was a member of the Lance Creek-Manville Bryant-Kant VFW Auxiliary No. 10390. She held various offices in the American Legion Auxiliary to Wieten-Dupes Post No. 4 in Lusk and served as president of the group several times. She also filled several district offices and in 1972 was department president of the Wyoming American Legion Auxiliary. For several years she was director of the Wonderful Wyoming Girls State.

She is survived by her children; Charles A. Vogel, of Lusk, Linda Baribeau of Leavenworth, Kansas, Bonita Yvonne Benjamin of Santa Ana, California, Gloria Johnson of Lance Creek, Wyoming; nine grandchildren; Stacy and Keven Baribeau of Leavenworth, Kansas, Shawn Vogel of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Artie Johnson, Lance Creek, Wyoming, Debbie Millard, Kinnear, Wyoming, Vicki Pinneo, Wheatland, Wyoming, Sandra Silvers and Nita Drinnon of Santa Ana, and Cherie Ditto of Fremont, California and four great-grandchildren: Cody Silvers of Santa Ana, Sean, Kari and Jeff Werten of Fremont, California; and one brother; John A. DeGroot of Colorado and one sister; Phyllis Manning of Arlington, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and six brothers. Memorials to the Congregational Church Organ Fund or the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital to purchase needed equipment would be appreciated by the family.
