Hundreds of friends and the community in general was saddened Sunday to learn of the passing of Harold A. Shoopman, age 23, who passed away at 8:15 a.m., Sunday morning., from injuries received the previous evening in an unfortunate auto accident, about 3 1/2 miles west of Lusk on HIghway No. 20.

Harold was employed by the Argo Oil Company in the Lance Creek field and had been living in Lusk, driving to his work each day. He was to go on duty on the morning tour, from 11 pl.m. to 8 a.m., and left his home about 10:15 p.m., for Lance Creek. On the long hill west of town which curves to the north the driver apparently lost control of the car about halfway up the hill and it plunged over an embankment on the east side of the highway, smashing the top out and battering the left side of the vehicle. Young Shoopman apparently was thrown from the car and when found was unconscious.

Warren Schroefel, Joe Manning and Robert Vollmer, local youths happened along soon after the accident and rushed to Lusk for a doctor and to notify his wife and parents. The injured man was brought in the Lusk hospital and all possible aid was given. However, he failed to rally and passed away the f9llowing morning without regaining consciousness. He suffred a fractured skull and broken leg as well as severe lacerations and bruises.

Harold was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Shoopman of Lusk. His father is sheriff of Niobrara county. The young man was born in Nebraska and at an early age moved to Wyoming with his parents. The family first located at Shawnee and Keeline, later coming to Lusk. The young man attended the local schools and was graduated with the class of 1934. Later he attended the University of Wyoming two years, being affiliated with the A. T. O. fraternity.

On July 19, 1939, he was united in marriage to his boyhood sweetheart, Laura Virginia Wood. His widow, her small daughter, Connie, and the sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Shoopman and an older brother, Virgil, of Lance Creek, are left to mourn his untimely passing.

He was a young man of an unusually sunny disposition and made friends wherever he made an acquaintance. A legion of friends will miss his presence and his cheerful friendship.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning, November 28, 1939, at the Peet Mortuary Chapel, with Rev. Millard H. Marshall in charge. A quartet composed of Mrs. H. J. Templeton, Mrs. Ab DeCastro, J. M. Hungate and Ford H. Kuns sang "Old Rugged Cross," "City Four Sqaure," and "Safe In the Arms of Jesus," accompanied at the piano by Mrs. J. P. Watson. Pall bearers were classmates of the deceased, Jim Smith, Billy Hassed, Albert Bennett, Gene Bass, Bob Templeton and Mike Kilmer. Honorary Pallbearers were Howard Shrum, Frank Christian, Clark Kuhn and John Erlewine.

Following the services here the body was taken to Cairo, Nebraska, the old family home and burial will be made at that place.
