Viola P. Penfield

Services for Viola P. Penfield, age 84, will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the Peet Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Scott Grimshaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Penfield died Saturday, February 11, 1989, at her home in Lusk. She was born October 17, 1904, in Woodriver, Hall County, Nebraska, the daughter of Louie and Grace Vierk. She attended school there and grew to adulthood. She married Leonard Ozro Penfield on October 22, 1924, and they moved to Wyoming in 1925, homesteading north of Lance Creek.

Five children were born to Ozro and Viola; Mercedes Porter, Donna May Parmely, Bonnie Hawkins, Grant Penfield, and Beulah Fraser.

Viola and Ozro lived and raised their family in Niobrara County until Ozro died on October 31, 1954. At this time Viola moved to Lusk and worked in the Laundry for Huck Baldwin for several years.

Viola enjoyed her yard, flowers, and rosebushes. She had a home full of house plants that she tended with loving care. She spent many hours sewing quilt blocks on her treadle machine and tying quilts for all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends.

Viola never forgot a birthday and all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren looked forward to their birthday card and the crisp dollar bill.

Viola always had a story book handy for her quiet time and you could see a light burning at her house as she enjoyed her TV and music; she could put a name to every face on the screen.

Viola had the disposition everyone should be blessed with. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. She always had time to teach a granddaughter to sew or a grandson to play dominos or just have a fun time entertaining them with a game of "Uncle Wiggly". She spent many an hour letting a little cowboy tie her to her rocking chair with a sash cord while she patiently read her story book.

Viola always had the best stories about the "good old days". She died as she lived, Peacefully.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ozro, and a brother Arthur Vierk.

Survivors include: two sisters, Esther Kinney of Lusk, and Myrtle Ummel of Cairo, Nebraska; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Buster and Reba Penfield of Lance Creek; five children, Mercedes Porter of Glenwood Springs, CO, Donna May Parmely of Lusk, Bonnie Hawkins of Lade Stevens, Washington, Grant Penfield of Arlington, Washington, and Beulah Fraser of Tribune, Kansas; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

For those who wish, memorials to the First Baptist Church in Lusk will be appreciated by the family.
