Charles Logan Brewster was born March 14, 1875 in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada on Lake Ontario. He came to Lead, S. D. in 1888 when he was 13 years old, staying with his aunt, Mrs. Eliza Bryant, who owned and operated the Bryant Hotel. This was the era of gold. The book "Pioneering on the Cheyenne River" says, "Mrs. Bryant had grubstaked more people to prospect for gold than any other person in the Black Hills. Gold nuggets were plentiful and jubilantly displayed." Logan, as he was called then, attended school weekdays and helped in the hotel week-ends and evenings. When he was 17 he went to live with his brother-in-law, "Carrick Red Hill" on the Belle Fourche River and was introduced to the cattle business.

Mr. Brewster married Julia Inez Hogg in 1897 in Lead, and they were the parents of two sons and two daughters. In Lead he was a contractor in the Homestake gold mine. From there the family moved to Wyoming and established the ranch known as the Bar X Ranch where they reared their children. Later the family moved to Edgemont so the children could receive more education. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Brewster spent the winter in California. Mrs. Brewster died in 1958 thus changing his pattern of life.

Mr. Brewster is survived by a daughter, Inez E. Kelly of Long Beach, CA. two sons; John Byron Brewster of Tensleep and Stanford Van Lear Brewster of Hat Creek; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
