Mrs. J.M. Marchant Laid at Rest In Lusk Cemetery Following Final Services Conducted Sunday Afternoon

Last rites were held for the late Mrs. Sylvie M. Marchant, wife of J. M. Marchant of the Cheyenne River community, at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, February 14, from the chapel of the Peet Funeral Home.

Tribute to the life of the deceased was given by Rev. G.W. Seitsma, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Edgemont, So. Dak., who conducted the services. "Home on the Range" was sung as a solo by Pat Colgan of Edgemont, and "Nearer My God to Thee" was sung by a mixed trio composed of Mesdames Emerson Bonner and A.B. DeCastro of this city, and Mr. Colgan. Mrs. J.P. Watson presided at the organ.

Interment was made in the Lusk Cemetery with the remains being borne to their last resting place by Allen Coates, "Bud" Black, Ted Jones, Leonard Sedgwick, Ed Rumney and Harold Hammell.

Mrs. Sylvie Maupin Marchant was born at Point Pleasant, West Virginia on Feb. 24, 1884, the daughter of John T. and Harriet Lucy Hogg. In 1896, as a little girl of twelve, Sylvie came to Wyoming with her parents, brothers and sisters. Her father filed on a homestead on Lance Creek adjoining that of his oldest son, Will, who had preceded them to Wyoming in 1884, and was active in raising cattle and thoroughbred horses. Edgemont, So. Dak., was their nearest town and although the family lived there most of the time, many trips were taken back and forth from town to the ranch. Sylvie was delighted with ranch life and spent many happy hours riding with her sisters over and near by country investigating old abandoned ranches one of which was the old 999. While riding alone one day soon after the Taylorville Indian battle she came upon a band of Indians, and as they were peaceful all went well. These tales Sylvie loved to relate.

She attended school in Edgemont, S.D., and later had two years of college at Bellevue, Nebr., where she majored in music.

In 1907, she was married to J.M. (Mike) Marchant. Two sons were born to them, James Allen and Patrick Henry. Their first home was on Old Woman Creek near the head of Lance Creek. Later they built up a home on Boggy Creek where they lived for many years.

Sylvie was blessed with a very unselfish nature, she was gentle, kind and helpful to all. She was one of these rare individuals who really loved all humankind. Everyone who met her was her friend.

She was skilled in the art of painting and exhibited pictures at the first Wyoming State Fair. She delighted in depicting western scenes on canvas. Many of her paintings of the activities and scenes of the old West, which are so rapidly disappearing, are skillfully done and true to life.

Her hobbies were many and varied. One she loved was collecting old history and souvenirs. She did an unusual amount of work in collecting the data and assembling the biographies of the Wyoming pioneers. All these she wrote by hand to be published in the book "Pioneering on the Cheyenne River." Sylvie received many letters from distant points in regard to this book, and many books were sent for her to autograph. She saw beauty in everything. Her gentle heart and clever, helpful hands will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two sisters and two brothers. She leaves to mourn her passing, her loving husband, Mike, two sons, James and Patrick, two daughters-in-law, Pauline and Marjorie, four grandchildren, Jack, Anthony, Annette and Jeanette, one sister, Mrs. Inez Brewster, one brother, Ethan Hogg, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
