Eph Hogg, Area Resident Since 1896 Dies Sun.

Eph Hogg, 85, and a area resident for 66 years died Sunday from the infirmities of old age in the Manring Convalescing Home. Funeral services were held from the Peet Chapel Wednesday afternoon.

The Rev. James Davis of the Lusk Congregational Church, officiated at the funeral with four nephews, Mat Marchant, Jim Marchant, Stan Brewster, Byron Brewster and two grandnephews, Jack Marchant and Phillip Brewster serving as pallbearers.

A mixed quartet of Mrs. Ruth Thomas, Mrs. Mary Anne Griffith, Harry Lyon and Jim Willson sang two appropriate songs for this man that had spent his lifetime on the range - "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Home on the Range."

Ethan Allen Hogg was born in 1877 in West Virginia and came to Wyoming with his parents in 1896. His eldest brother, Will, had come to Wyoming six years earlier and wrote back such glowing accounts that Eph convinced his parents that the west was for them. In 1898, when Eph reached 21 he filed on a homestead along Lance Creek in what is now Niobrara County.

Lusk residents may well remember Eph as a pleasant, little old man that was a familiar site up and down Main Street, but the early day cowboys had quite a different picture of him. He was known as the toughest wrestler in the area and once the worse outlaw horse in that area was named "Eph".

Eph's first love was horse racing. He and his brothers had some of the finest horses in that area and even built a half-mile track on the H.O.G. ranch. The H.O.G. horses raced far and wide.

However, not all the H.O.G. horses were just for racing and many were sold to the Army at Ft. Robinson.

Eph never married and thus leaves no immediate family.
