Edmund Duff Hollon

Edmund Duff Hollon, 87, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at the Alzheimers Unit of the Douglas Care Center. Ed was born on Sept. 14, 1923 in Lusk to Duff and Emma (Giedd) Hollon. He was raised and educated in Lusk, along with his older brother C.E. "Jerry" Hollon. Ed graduated from Lusk High School in 1941 and then attended the Univ. of Wyoming for a year.

Ed then worked on various construction projects, including the Heart Mountain Internment Center and building water towers near Coeur d'Alene, ID, prior to joining the U.S. Army.

He served in the 3rd Army 8th Tank Battalion commanded by General George Patton during the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe campaigns.

After being discharged from the Army in Dec. 1945, Ed returned to Lusk and established the Hollon Cement and Forest Products Company. When Jerry returned from the Army, Ed and Jerry were partners in the company.

Ed and Jerry eventually established and ran lumber yards, including building construction crews, in Lusk, Douglas and Torrington, as well as Edgemont, SD, during varying times of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

In 1974 Ed, in association with his son Blake, founded Athletic Surfacing Inc. which was transformed into Athletic Surfacing International in 1983. Ed and Blake installed tennis courts, gymnasium floors, and running tracks in WY, MT, SD, CO and AZ.

Ed and Blake are co-inventors and owners of 9 U.S. Patents and 4 European Patents, including patents for uniform compaction of asphalt concrete, method of making a roadway with a water-impermeable membrane layer, GPS integrated ELT system, track marking system, track surface laying, and fuel supply system.

Ed married Marjorie L. Smith on October 28, 1947. Ed and Marge have three sons; Ward (1948), Rick (1952), and Blake (1954). The family lived in Lusk (except for one year in Edgemont) until moving to Douglas in 1963.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry Hollon, of Laramie; sister-in-law Dorothy "Taff" Leeling of Casper; brothers-in-law Harold "Hal" Harrington of Sheridan and Roy D. Leeling of California; mother-in-law Ida Foley of Douglas; and, father-in-law Everett Smith (Dorothy) of Lusk.

Ed is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie L. Hollon of Douglas; sons H. Rick Hollon (Anita) and Blake Duff Hollon (Susan) of Douglas and Ward O. Hollon of Tempe, AZ; grandchildren Dustin Duff Hollon (Jessa) of Phoenix, AZ, Tyler Cole Hollon (Jessica) of Ogden, UT, and Jessica Lynn McGuire (Justin) of Douglas; and great-grandson Mac Tyler Hollon of Ogden; sisters-in-law Donabelle Hollon of Laramie and Joan Harrington of Sheridan; brothers-in-law Raymond Smith (May) of Manville and Earl Smith (Joyce) of Rozet; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

No services are planned at this time, but will be held at a later date.

Memorial Services for Edmund Duff Hollon, 87, are now scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church, 136 South 5th Street, in Douglas, Wyoming. Services will be followed by a coffee/cookie reception.

Ed passed away on July 27, 2011, at the Alzheimer's Unit of the Douglas Care Center. He is survived by wife Marjorie Hollon; sons Ward, Rick, and Blake Hollon; grandchildren Dustin and Tyler Hollon and Jessica McGuire; and great-grandson Mac Hollon.
