Vernal H. Fosher

Funeral services for Vernal H. Fosher were held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 12 at the Bader Funeral Home in Lusk with Rev. Mark Lohr officiating. Vernal was interred in the Lusk Cemetery beside her husband, Harold Fosher.

Mrs. Fosher died Monday, March 9, 1998, in Torrington. She was born Dec. 3, 1902 in Rock County, Nebr. to E. D. and Hattie Vargason Lamb. She was the fourth of ten children. Her early childhood was spent in Nebraska. In 1907 the family moved by immigrant car to Oregon where they resided for two years. In 1909, the family returned to Wyoming in a covered wagon, an event which she enjoyed sharing with hundreds of school children. In 1913, the family homesteaded south of Manville approximately ten miles with Vernal continually living in this community since that time.

She attended school at Manville but graduated from high school at Sprague, Nebr. After two years of college she began her teaching career of 25 years, all of which was in Niobrara County. Her first school was the Thomas-Ruffing School in the Red Bird area. Later she taught elementary school at Manville, Keeline, Lance Creek, and Cheyenne River. She received much satisfaction from former students who gave her credit for their successful business careers.

On June 2, 1926, she and Harold A. Fosher were united in marriage at Hot Springs, S. Dak. To this union were born two sons, Dean of Manville and Ramie of Lusk. In 1930 they moved to what is now the Hidden Valley Ranch located 5 miles south of Manville and resided there until 1964 when they moved to Lusk. During this time Vernal helped on the ranch, enjoyed here garden and flowers, was a 4-H leader and a Sunday School Teacher. She was also a charter member of the Lusk Church of Christ, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of Eastern Star.

After her husband passed away in 1966, she devoted the next 30 years to making quilts, which have been distributed throughout the world. She was very charitable-minded with many of the quilts going to missionaries, children's homes and disaster areas. Due to failing health she moved to Evergreen Court in Torrington where she resided for one year. On Memorial Day weekend, 1997, she fell at the Lusk Cemetery and broke her hip, so she spent the last nine months of her life at the Torrington Community Hospital.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband and seven brothers and sisters. Surviving are her two sons; one daughter-in-law; two sisters; all her grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends. For those who wish, memorials to the Lusk/Niobrara Ambulance Service will be appreciated by the family.

Bader Funeral Home of Lusk was in charge of arrangements.
