Funeral Services for Mrs. Burke Held in California Oct. 19

Funeral services for Mrs. Montivel Burke of San Marino, Calif., were held October 19 from Pierce Brothers Mortuary in Alhambra with interment at Sunnyside Mausoleum in Long Beach.

Mrs. Burke died October 14 at the Spencer Hospital following a heart attack. She and her daughter, Mrs. Paul J. Evans were visiting Mrs. Burke's brother, Leonard Christian, in Lusk when she was taken ill.

Her husband is a State Assemblyman in California and her son, Talmadge Burke is Mayor of Alhambra.

She and her husband moved several months ago to their new home at 1525 St. Albans Rd., San Marino, Calif. Only last month, Vice President Richard M. Nixon had accepted an invitation to attend a reception at the home of Assemblyman and Mrs. Burke when he returns from Washington, D. C. next month.

Mrs. Burke was born in Adair County, Ia., and spent her early life and was educated in Wyoming where her father, Andrew Christian, and her brother, James W. Christian, served as State Senators.

She was active in the Alhambra Chapter of the Eastern Star; San Gabriel Valley White Shrine; the PALS, an organization of the wives of State legislators and was a member of the Bethany Church of Alhambra.

As wife of the then mayor of Alhambra, Mrs. Burke christened the S. S. Alhambra Victory on Jan. 31, 1945.

Besides her husband, son, and daughter, she is survived by a brother, Leonard Christian of Lusk and two grandchildren, Paula Jean and Brent Burke Evans.

Mrs. Burke had been a resident of Alhambra for 37 years. She was the only woman ever to be first lady of Alhambra twice-once as the wife of the mayor and again as the mother of the mayor.

Mrs. Burke Dies In Lusk Monday

Mrs. Nellie Mae Burke of San Marino, Calif. died Monday evening at the Spencer Hospital following a stroke. Funeral services will be held at Pierce Brother's Alhambra Mortuary, Saturday. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Mausoleum, Long Beach, Calif.

Mrs. Burke was a sister of Leonard F. Charistian and the late James W. Christian of Lusk.

She, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. Paul Evans, came to Lusk to visit friends and relatives and became ill shortly after her arrival.
