Joe Manning Dies: Funeral Held Monday

Joseph Astin Manning, 52, died February 25 in the Arlington Memorial Hospital, Arlington, Texas, following a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Peet Mortuary in Lusk Monday at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Robert Boutwell officiated. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. A. F. DeCastro, organist, accompanied Tim Johnson, soloist, as he sang the "Lord's Prayer" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Casket bearers were Bob Vollmer, Bill Magoon, Ted Lohr, Ab DeCastro, Claude Redding and James Shillenn.

He was the only son of Joseph Clarence and Helen (McFarlane) Manning, born June 9, 1918, in Lusk, Wyo. He was reared in Lusk where he attended public schools and graduated with the class of 1936 from Lusk High School. During his high school years he was a member of the Wyoming National Guard, and in 1937 he enrolled in the Lincoln Aeronautical Institute in Lincoln, Neb., from which he graduated.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as captain in the U.S. Air Force from September 1942 until his discharge in November 1945. His service was with the Transport Command Base, the India-China Wing Base in India. His unit received a special commendation for flying supplies over the Himalayas.

On August 24, 1950, he married Phyllis Jane DeGroot at Provo, Utah. They are the parents of two children, Joseph William and Diane Sue, both of the family home in Arlington.

In 1951 he attended the Indiana Technical College at Fort Wayne, Ind., and was graduated as an aeronautical engineer in 1954. For several years they made their home in Dallas, Texas, where he was employed by the Ling-Temco-Vought company. He was transferred to the Edwards Air Force Base at Lancaster, Calif., in 1955 where they made their home until 1963. At that time he was transferred back to Arlington where the family now resides. He was a member of B.P.O. Elks No. 1797 of Lusk.

Survivors besides the widow and children include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Willson, Lusk; one brother, Robert R. Willson, Camarillo, Calif.; and numerous other relatives.
