S. Berniece Bird

S. Berniece Bird, age 92, died April 18, 1995, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held at a later date in Denver, Colo., at the Crown Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Bird was born January 24, 1903, in Ledyard, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Elvira Hogg Brown. Her family moved to Edgemont, S.D., when she was an infant and they owned a sheep ranch 40 miles northwest of Lusk, where she attended a country school. She also attended school in Hot Springs, S.D.

In 1924, she married Everett "Red" Bird and lived several places while he was employed drilling oil wells.

In 1932, they purchased the country store 37 miles north of Lusk that her father owned. Mr. and Mrs. Bird ran the Red Bird General Store and Conoco gas station until 1968. Mr. Bird died on June 22, 1970, at which time Mrs. Bird moved to Cheyenne. She moved to Lusk in 1978, and continued to live there until her death.

Mrs. Bird was an avid artist all her life and sold or gave away much of her artwork. She also enjoyed doll making, spinning, weaving, sewing and reading. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Everett Bird, two sisters, and one brother.

She is survived by her sister, Gladys Rigg of Denver, Colo.; three nephews, Dean Holland of Denver, Donald Zurcher of Omaha, Neb., and John Brown of Moreno Valley, Cal.; three nieces, Berniece Zuber of Lusk, Harriet Sullivan of Omaha, and Betty Carr of Kansas City, Mo.; and close friends, Melva Meng and Jim and Debbie Meng and family of Lusk.

A memorial for an art scholarship for a graduate of Niobrara County High School has been set up in care of Bader Funeral Home.

Bader Funeral Home of Lusk is in charge of arrangements.
