Dorthy M. Lohr passed away on August 31, 2023 at the Platte County Legacy home in Wheatland Wyoming after being a resident for 13 months. Dorthy Mae Handel was born on April 4, 1930 in rural Hayes County near Wauneta, Nebraska to Roy D. and Ora E. Handel, the first of three daughters. She graduated from Wauneta high school at the age of 16 and enrolled in Doane College at Crete Nebraska. She graduated with a teaching degree and came to Lusk to teach English and Spanish at Lusk High School in 1951. Her roommate set her up at a dance and she met Walter Lohr, they were married at her folk's home in Wauneta, Nebraska on June 10th 1951. They lived on the Harlan Lohr ranch where Walt worked with his father until they moved to Lusk where Walt was employed by Frontier Lumber. Both of Dorthy's boys were born while they lived on the ranch, Roy in 1954 and David in 1956. Walt & Dorthy lived in the basement apartment of Harve & Velma Ledford upon moving into Lusk and it was there that Dorthy ran a kindergarten class out of her home for a couple years. When the school district decided to include kindergarten in the school system Dorthy became the teacher. She continued as the kindergarten teacher until the retirement of Agnes Peet as school librarian and then took over those duties until her own retirement in 1979.
Dorthy was helping her son Roy at Walt's Lathe & Machine when Walt passed away on March 3, 1980 and continued at the shop until approximately 1984, Dorthy then spent her time serving on the Senior Center Board, joining with her friends starting the Bag Lady's craft group and becoming immersed in quilting. She attended quilt retreats once in Missouri and many years in Idaho, talking about and working on quilts became her passion.
She is survived by her sons, Roy (Verlla) of Lusk and David of Hartville, Wyoming, a sister Nelda Hallner of Grand Island, Nebraska and grand children Tyrel Lohr of Lusk, Tinette Hales of Lusk and Jodi Davis of Cheyenne. Dorthy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walt and sister Linda Tunender and numerous inlaws.
Dorthy was cremated and her ashes will be placed next to Walt in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Kirtley.
