Mrs. Gartrell Dies Thursday

Mrs. Eva May Gartrell, 81, of Lusk died in a Fort Collins Hospital last Thursday from a heart attack.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:00 from the Peet Chapel with the Rev. C. W. Jervis of the First Baptist Church of Lusk, officiating. Mrs. Lyle Eddy and Mrs. Emerson Bonner sang "Abide With Me" and "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. A. F. DeCastro was organist.

Pallbearers were C. E. Marvin, A. F. DeCastro, Walter Schnorenberg, Fred Hansen, Harry Fernau Sr., and Jennings Ruffing. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Eva May Waggoner was born to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Waggoner, March 14, 1885, near Gravity, Iowa. In 1902 she married John W. Gartrell of Gravity. That same year the couple moved to Buffalo, Wyo. where they homesteaded and engaged in various businesses. There three children were born, a daughter Leila and two sons, Orville and Earl.

In 1920, the family moved to Lusk where Mr. Gartrell was engaged by the Chicago & Northwestern Railway as section foreman until 1930. From that time until 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Gartrell operated a dairy farm on the north edge of Lusk. In 1946 they retired to their home on South Oak Street in Lusk. After her husband died in 1952, Mrs. Gartrell lived alone except for occasional visits to Chicago to visit her son, Orville and family. She attended the Baptist Church and was an active member of the Lusk Chapter of the American War Mothers.

After returning from a Christmas vacation in Chicago, she became ill and was care for by her neighbors until her sister, Mrs. Marjorie Taylor of Fort Collins came and stayed with her. In June she was hospitalized in Fort Collins.

Survivors are her son, Orville; two sisters, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Bessie Cooper of New Market, Iowa; a brother, Roy Waggoner of Fort Collins.

A daughter, Leila and son, Earl and husband died previously.

Note: The Lusk Cemetery records state that the date of death was July 13, 1966. However, in 1966, July 14 was a Thursday.
