August Spjut Dies After Operation in Douglas Hospital
Sadness crowded into the hearts of many persons in this county last week when August Spjut, well known oil field worker, succumbed to the effects of a ruptured appendix at the Douglas hospital at 11:30 o'clock Thursday night, October 15th. Mr. Spjut had reached the age of 39 years, 8 months and 25 days.
He had taken ill about two weeks ago while at work in the Lance Creek field, where he had been employed by the Indian Petroleum company for a number of years. He was brought to the Lusk hospital and later removed to the Douglas institution, where an operation was performed last Wednesday.
The remains were brought to Lusk by George Earl Peet, mortician, and funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Peet funeral home. Rev. Edwin F. Irwin, pastor of the Congregational church, officiated. The body was immediately sent to Neligh, Nebr. and from there taken to Royal, Nebr., Mr. Spjut's birthplace, where interment was made Monday afternoon.
The many friends, by their presence at the brief services here, attested to the high esteem in which Mr. Spjut was held by those who knew him. He was a loyal and affectionate husband and father, and his home life he cherished above all things. He was a friend in the strictest sense of the word and none but words of praise have ever been spoken of him.
He is survived by his widow and two children, a son, Douglas, and a daughter, Eula. His mother and a brother, Andrew, of Royal, and one sister, Mrs. Nettie Helmer, of Clearwater, Nebr., also survive. He was preceded in death by his father by only four months. To his loved ones who mourn, the entire community unites in offering deepest sympathy in their great sorrow.
August Spjut was born near Royal, Nebraska, on the 20th of January, 1892. As a boy he was christened there in the Methodist Church. He was married to Belle McLean on the 4th of October, 1913.
In 1918 he came to Wyoming and has spent the last thirteen years in the employ of different companies at Lance Creek, with the exception of one year when he was in New Mexico. At the time of his death he was in the employ of the Indian Petroleum Company. He died suddenly in the Douglas hospital last Thursday night, thirty-nine years of age. He leaves his wife, two children - Douglas and Eula - also his mother, a brother, Andrew Spjut, and a sister, Mrs. Nettie Helmer. The last three are all from Royal, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his father by only four months.
