George Sylvester, long-time law officer, dies at home

George Sylvester, 79, died at his home in Lusk May 12. Sylvester was deputy sheriff of Niobrara County from 1945 to 1958 and was sheriff from 1958 until 1966. He was employed for many years by the C & H Refinery.

George Sylvester was born April 11, 1899, in Keya Paha County, Nebr., where he spent his youth and met LeLa Helen Sherman. They were married December 8, 1922 at Valentine, Neb. the family moved to Wyoming in 1922 where he resided until his death.

Sylvester is survived by two daughters, Elaine Hill of Suitland, Md.; and Nila Jean Barnette, Lusk; four grandchildren, Scott, John and Andy Barnette, and Larry Doman, Upper Marlboro, Md.; one great-grandson, Mathew Scott Doman; six brothers and six sisters. He was preceded in death by his wife, LeLa; his parents and one brother.

Funeral service was held Monday, May 15 at the Peet Mortuary with Rev. Frank Bozart officiating. Edna DeCastro, organist, accompanied Marilyn Cockreham as she sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand." Pallbearers were Jim Shillenn, Harold Rogers, Si West, Rex Shoults, Ed Fulk and Lloyd Coleman. Honorary bearers were all his many friends. Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.
