Clarence Patten Dies In Oregon

Clarence J. Patten, 69, resident of Niobrara County for 27 years, died in Josephine County General Hospital at Grants Pass, Ore., Dec. 9, after a short illness.

Three of Mr. Patten's children still living in Wyoming were able to attend the funeral and returned home Saturday, Dec. 17. They are James, Keeline, Mrs. Sherman Wright of Lance Creek, and Mrs. Jack Lampert of Newcastle. They left Dec. 9 and had to travel through the storm of that period to complete the trip.

Rosary services were held at 7:30 Dec. 11 at the Hull and Hull Chapel of Grants Pass. Funeral Mass was at 10:00 a.m. Dec. 13 in St. Annes's Church with Fr. Daniel Kelly officiating. Interment was made in the IOOF Cemetery, Medford, Ore. E.D. Lamb and Leonard Griffith, now of Grants Pass, but also long time friends of Mr. Patten at Manville, acted as honorary pall bearers.

Clarence Joseph Patten was born October 2, 1880 at Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Wm. and Elizabeth Patten. In 1881 his parents moved to a homestead near Kirkwood, Nebraska. He grew to manhood there, and in 1909 married Etta V. Beck at Newport, Nebraska. They lived in Nebraska until 1914 when they moved near Manville, Wyo., to live on a homestead there. In 1916 they moved into the town of Manville where he operated a blacksmith and repair shop for for many years. They lived in Wyoming until 1941 when they moved to Murphy, Oregon near Grants Pass to make their home. He lived in Oregon until the time of his death on Dec. 7, 1949. Note: According to the FamilySearch International Genealogical Index, the date of death was December 9, 1949.

He is survived by his widow, Etta V. Patten of Murphy, Ore.; three sons, James of Keeline; Irvine of Medford, Ore.; and Lyle of Murphy, Ore.; four daughters, Sadie Halley, Grants Pass Ore., Stella Nelson, Applegate, Ore.; Mildred Wright, Lance Creek, Wyo.; and Dorothy Lampert, of Newcastle, Wyo.; a sister, Mrs. J.D. Arens of Eagle Point, Ore.; a brother, Charles Patten of Divine, Texas, and 18 grandchildren.
