Funeral Services for Alfred Gibbs Held in Newcastle Thursday
Funeral services for Alfred Gibbs, 78, long time resident of the Cheyenne River community, who died Apr. 5 in Hot Springs, were held Apr. 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the McColley Chapel in Newcastle with the Rev. Seitsma of Edgemont officiation. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery at Newcastle.
Alfred John Gibbs was born in York County, Nebraska, Jan. 5, 1875 and died at the Lutheran Hospital in Hot Springs Apr. 5. He was one of 13 children born to George and Elizabeth Gibbs.
In early childhood he moved with his parents to Hay Springs, Nebr., where he grew to manhood and was married there to Miss Katie Walgreen. They are the parents of eight children, two of them, a boy and a girl, having preceded their father in death.
When a young man he joined the Friend church.
In 1918 Mr. Gibbs and his wife and children moved to Wyoming where he homesteaded on the Cheyenne River and engaged in ranching and farming until 1937 when they moved to Newcastle, because of Mrs. Gibbs' health.
Since the completion of the new highway between Lusk and Newcastle they started a tourist court and filling station known as River View a short distance south of the Cheyenne River bridge.
Survivors besides the widow are five sons, Lawrence, Alfred, Joe and Clyde, who reside near the family home and Irwin who lives in the state of Washington. A daughter, Katherine Gibbs resides at the family home. There are 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
