Funeral services for Beth (Wasserburger) Sides, 82, were held Sat., May 16th, 2015, at Pier Funeral Home in Lusk, with members of Lusk Drove #64 of the Benevolent, Patriotic Order of DOES officiating.

Beth passed away peacefully May 10, 2015, at Niobrara Health and Life Center, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

Elizabeth Helen Wasserburger was born at home near Harrison, Nebraska to Wilford Dennis and Frances Elizabeth (Konrath) Wasserburger on Dec. 4th, 1932, the seventh of ten children. The family moved to Lusk in 1944, and Beth lived the rest of her life in Lusk (with the exception of Doug's Air Force Service), graduating from Lusk High School in 1950. She married Douglas Sides on Apr. 22nd, 1953. During Doug's service in the Air Force, the couple lived in Shreveport, Louisiana; San Antonio, Texas; and West Palm Beach, Florida, before returning to Lusk to make their home. They often reminisced about living in housing where they could see outdoors through cracks in the bathroom walls, and moving with all their belongings packed in their car. Beth's most important job was mother to the couple's two daughters, Sheila and Lisa, but she also worked as a teller at Stockman's National Band and Lusk State Bank, and as a bookkeeper for Mueller Accounting.

Beth was a devoted and gentle mother and grandmother. Neither of her daughters remembers her raising her voice in anger. She adored (and possible spoiled a bit) her grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Moriah and Keilah. She always had a plate full of their favorite cookies waiting for their frequent visits to her home. She loved listening to Joshua play the violin he inherited from her father, and to the other three grandchildren play the piano. She made several trips to Colorado Springs to watch Moriah in figure skating competitions, and anxiously waited for Moriah's reports on the competitions she was unable to attend.

Beth was known for her beautiful yard and gardens, and enjoyed having her grandchildren and neighbor children "help" her with her gardening. She always had beautiful flower gardens surrounding her home, and loved growing heavenly blue morning glories in honor of Doug after his passing. She loved to be outdoors, and still mowed her lawn and shoveled her sidewalk until very recently. Beth had a legendary love for ice cream, and her capacity for it impressed even her teenage grandsons. She was also an avid patron of the library, and had read most of the books on their shelves - especially the mysteries and thrillers.

Beth was very active in Lusk DOES Drove #64. She joined the Drove March 20th, 1980, and, after serving in several chairs served as President in 1986. Beth became Conductor of the Drove in 1992, and continued in that position until 2005, when her daughter Sheila took the position. She continued as Assistant Conductor until the time of her death. In 2002 she became a Grand Lodge member at Rapid City, SD. She co-chaired the kitchen with Elaine Lancaster for several years. She and Doug, along with Theresa and Vern Modine, Marlene and Ralph Sides, and Fredda Lou and Everett Kilmer, started the Veterans' Day Mexican dinners to benefit the Elks Veterans' Committee, and the dinners continue to this day. Beth, along with several other DOES, became a Life Member May 28th, 2005.

Surviving her are her daughters and their families: Sheila and Jim Tangney of Lusk; and Lisa and Chris Gilbert, Joshua (fiancé Robin Rumbold), Daniel, Moriah, and Keilah of Colorado Springs, Colorado; niece/"daughter" Vicky and Brett West of Lusk; brother Jim and Cindy Wasserburger of Aragon, New Mexico; sister-in-law Marlene Sides, Cheyenne, Wyoming; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Douglas C. Sides in 2005; siblings Margaret Lawler, Doris Thornhill, Elaine Kuhn, Jerry Wasserburger, Rosella Wasserburger, Leo Wasserburger, Ralph Wasserburger, and Kenneth Wasserburger; nieces Melonie (Kuhn) Chriswisser and Cassie Wasserburger; and nephew Ken Sides.

Memorials may be made to BPO DOES Drove #64 for Dogs for the Deaf, PO Box 1102, Lusk, WY 82225-1102; or to the Niobrara County Library Foundation, Bricks and Books, PO Box 510, Lusk, WY 82225-0510.
