Dr. Charles Joseph Eckenrode Jr., 73, died July 18, 2015 in his beloved home in Wyoming.

Born March 11, 1942 in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of Charles and Jessie (Shipley) Eckenrode Sr.

He married Virginia Lee Miller on May 13, 1967 in Madison, WI. They have been married 48 years.

He attended Washington High School in Maryland, graduating in 1960. He received his B.S. in Entomology from the University of Maryland in 1964. He completed his Masters in 1968 and his PhD in 1970 from the University of Wisconsin.

He was a professor at Cornell University doing research at N.Y. State Agricultural Experiment Station from 1970 to 1999. During his tenure, his efforts focused on the development and improvement of protection for vegetable crops in N.Y. State. His areas of expertise involved biological, chemical, and cultural controls, plant resistance, monitoring systems and prediction models for a number of crop pests. He co-authored more than 150 papers.

He was an avid believer in working directly with growers and providing them with the best tools possible for their insect pest problems.

His systems approach to pest control and his widespread collaboration earned him respect from both growers and researchers.

He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1999 as a world expert in onion pest management.

With no delay, he and Ginny moved to his beloved state where he had hunted and fished for 30 years. Nothing epitomized his vision of paradise more than the prairies of Wyoming.

Preceded in death by his father, Charles.

Survived by wife Ginny, mother, Jessie, sister Virginia K, daughter Katie, son Eric (Jeanine), granddaughter Ava Claire, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private family service will be held. Memorials may be given to a charity of one's choice.

Pier Funeral Home, Lusk, Wyoming is in charge of arrangements.
