Zilla Belle Deuel

Zilla Belle Deuel, former Lusk resident and more recently a Cheyenne resident, died Feb. 20 at Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne.

She was born Sept. 20, 1903, in Hiawatha, Kan. Her family were early pioneers in northeastern Kansas.

She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1921 and received a degree from Hardin College for Women in Mexico, MO. She also attended the University of Kansas.

She married Edgar Floyd Deuel of VanTassell on Feb. 25, 1925, at Torrington.

Mrs. Deuel was honorary state regent of both the Wyoming Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Colonists. She was a member of the Kaw Valley Chapter of the U. S. Daughters of the War of 1812 in Topeka, Kan. and the Daughters of Colonial Wars in South Dakota.

She was a member and first woman president of the Cheyenne Kennel Club and a member of the Brown County Historical Society, Kansas University Alumni Association, and St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Holton, Kan.

She was a 50 year member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and belonged to the Mizpah Chapter in Cheyenne.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John Schmid of Cheyenne; a sister, Mrs. Albert Hajicek of Litchfield, Minn.; two grandchildren, David Schmid of Ashland, Mont. and Michael Schmid of Cheyenne; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. at Schrader Chapel. Rev. Stanley Guille officiated. Burial was in Hiawatha, Kan.

Friends who prefer may contribute to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Holton, Kan, in care of Dr. Ansel Searles.
