John Erlewine Dies of Cancer Last Wednesday

John E. Erlewine, 51, of Lusk, died last Wednesday evening at the Veterans Hospital in Hot Springs, S. Dak. following an extended illness from cancer. Funeral services were conducted from the Peet Chapel in Lusk, with the American Legion being in charge of the graveside services. Burial was in Lusk cemetery.

The Rev. Dean Addington of St. George's Episcopal Church of Lusk officiated. Organ music was by Mrs. Gerald Bardo and she accompanied a male quartet composed of Gerald Bardo, Dale M. Bardo, Dr. Richard Collins and Harry Lyon as they sang "Sun of My Soul Thou Savior Dear." Mark Lohr soloist sang "It Is Well With My Soul."

Casket bearers were Harold Rogers, Bud Hoblit, Harold Gautschi, Robert Vollmer, Charles Vaughan and Earle Townsend.

John Edmund Erlewine was born to Samuel Herbert Erlewine and Ada Claire McKinney Erlewine at Van Tassell, Wyo., December 18, 1916. He lived in and around Van Tassell until after his father's death in July 1930, when his mother and family moved to Lusk the following December.

Mr. Erlewine was graduated from the Lusk High School with the class of 1935. He worked for various businesses before and after his graduation. He entered the U. S. Army Air Force September 12, 1942 and served until he received his discharge February 23, 1946.

November 1, 1952, he married Mrs. Verda Lohr Carlisle and they were the parents of one daughter, Linda.

They moved to Glendo in 1953 where Mr. Erlewine and his brother, Jim, purchased the Standard Service Station. While there Mr. Erlewine belonged to the Glendo Fire Department and was a member of the Town Council. In the spring of '59 the family returned to Lusk where they were residing at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Lusk Fire Department. He had been employed for several years at Gautschi's Service Station where he was working until the time of his illness.

His parents, an infant sister and infant brother and brother, Glenn (Moon), died previously.

Survivors include his widow, Verda and daughter, Linda of the family home, one stepson Dick Carlisle of Phoenix, Ariz.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Patsy Brewster of Lusk, and Mrs. Kay Counts of Yuma, Ariz.; two brothers, Kenneth of Lusk and Jim of Casper, Wyo.; one sister, Miss Blanche Erlewine of Lusk; a great-aunt Miss E. Blanche Erlewine of Woodbine, Iowa; six step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the funeral of Mr. Erlewine were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hughes, Jack Jones, Glendo; Mrs. Lillian Burnham, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Stellpflug and family, Mrs. Floyd Lancster, Torrington; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Heckert, Douglas; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Murray, Casper; Mrs. Mark Woods, Eugene, Ore.; Dr. A. B. DeCastro, Hay Springs, Neb.; Mrs. Bud Fancher, Scappoose, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Milburn, Aurora, Ore.; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Carlisle, Phoenix, Ariz., Mr. Don Counts, Yuma, Ariz., Miss E. Blanche Erlewine, Woodbine, Iowa.

There were also many friends and relatives from Harrison, Van Tassell and the immediate rural areas too numerous to mention.
