John G. Grote

Services for John G. Grote, 84, of Lingle, were conducted Friday, March 8, 1991, at 2 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Torrington by Rev. Marvin Temme with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lingle.

Grote died March 5, 1991, at Community Hospital in Torrington. He was born June 11, 1906, to Charlie and Minnie (Stednitz) Grote at Wilcox, Neb., where he grew up and went to school. He worked on the railroad in Kansas and Illinois before moving to Harrison, Neb., to ranch until 1935.

On Aug. 27, 1930, he married Janice Umphemour in Hot Springs, S.D. They later moved to a farm in Kimball, Neb. He worked as a butcher for Farmers Cooperative in Bushnell, Neb. In 1953, they moved to Lingle where they owned and operated Grote's Cold Storage until retiring in 1973.

Grote was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Torrington and had been an elder at the Lutheran Church in Kimball. While in Bushnell, he was a trustee of the Village of Bushnell, a member of the Lions Club, a Boy Scout leader, and served on the school board. While in Lingle, he served on the town council, the school board and belonged to the Lions Club.

Survivors include his children Dolores King of Lingle, David Grote of Harvard, Ill., Richard Grote of Anchorage, Alaska. Also surviving are two sisters, Minnie Post of Richmond, Calif., and Edith Richardson of Nixa, Mo.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, six brothers and two sisters.

Memorials to the Lingle Rescue Unit or Our Savior Lutheran Church would be appreciated by the family.
