Alberta Edna Glasby

Alberta E. Glasby, age 89, rural Edgemont/Newcastle resident died Monday, Sept. 19 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Alberta was born April 10, 1905, in Edgemont to William N. and Clara May (Cooksey) Glasby. She was educated in Edgemont and worked in the Edgemont/Burdock area until the age of 19 when she went to work for Tom and Grace Wilson in Wyoming on the Cheyenne River. It was at this location, along with her folks and one brother, that she homesteaded. Over the years, through hard work and honesty, she built and actively managed a ranch that ran 300 head of Herefords and 600 head of sheep.

In 1953, along with Tom & Grace Wilson, she moved to Edgemont and built a house while daughter Beth attended school. In 1966 she moved back to the ranch for the remainder of her life.

In 1983, the Niobrara County Cowbelles honored her as Ranchwoman of the Year. She was a member of the Cheyenne River Homemakers extension club when it was active, past member of the Elks Lodge, member of the State Cowbelles Association, the Niobrara County Cowbelles Group 4, Wyoming Stockgrowers and United Church of Edgemont.

A memorial fund has been established to benefit the Edgemont Ambulance service.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing her life are: daughter, Beth & Clarence "Sonny" Lolley, Edgemont, S.D.; granddaughters, Theresa Simet and Connie Lolley, both of Rapid City, S.D.; great grandchildren, Darren, Courtney and Natasha; nephew, Billy and Barbara Glasby, New Jersey; grandnephew, Mark; grandniece, Colleen and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters, two nephews and one niece.

Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at VandeBossche/McColley's Chapel, Edgemont.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Edgemont United Churches with Rev. Al Wagner officiating. Burial was in the Edgemont Cemetery.
