Elizabeth Katherine (Betty Kay) Fernau was born in Ponca City, Okla. Jan 20, 1921, the daughter of Charles W. and Helen L Hahn. The family moved to Wheatland when Betty was five years old, and she received her primary education there. When she was a senior in high school, the family moved to Lusk. Betty attended the University of Wyoming for two years.
On April 5, 1942, Betty and Walter C. Fernau were married in St. George's Episcopal Church in Lusk. Walt served in the air corps during World War II and the family lived a number of places until his dismissal from the service when they returned to Lusk.
Betty was secretary to the Superintendent of Niobrara County School District for 22 years, retiring in January, 1983; she was also associated with Walt in the newspaper business for many years.
Betty and Walt have three children, John Charles Fernau, Elkton, Md., Margylou Huitt, Magnum, Okla. And Joseph Fernau, Gillette; and four grandchildren, Jonathon Michael, Paige, and Katie of Elkton, and Kristi, Gillette, all of whom survive her.
Besides her husband Walter, Betty is also survived by her mother Helen L. Veirs, her brother, Richard F. Hahn, Hardin and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her grandparents, her father, Chas W. Hahn, her sister Margery Jean Hahn, and her stepfather, Dr. J. B. Viers.
Betty had been ill for about five months. She died of cancer in Lusk on August 17, surrounded by the love of her family and many friends.
Services were conducted Saturday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Peet Mortuary with Rev. Frank Blish officiating.
Organist was Jane Bardo and Mark Lohr sang "The Lord's Prayer.
Memorials may be made to the Niobrara Hospital Auxiliary Nursing Scholarship program.
