Walter Charles Fernau

Memorial services for Walter Charles Fernau, 83, formerly of Lusk, have not yet been decided. Cremation has taken place.

Walt Fernau died Feb. 27, 2003, in California.

Walter Charles Fernau was born June 3, 1919, in Lusk, Wyo., the eleventh child of John J. and Anna Christina Fernau. He attended school in Lusk and graduated from Lusk High School.

Walt served his country from September 18, 1943 to March 15, 1946. As a teenager, he began working for The Lusk Herald under the guidance of J. B. Griffith and later was advertising manager for the newspaper. Walt then became co-owner of The Lusk Herald with Gerald Bardo.

Walt married Elizabeth K. (Betty) Hahn; they had three children, John, Margylou, and Joe. Walt was involved in many community activities and was active in St. George Episcopal Church. He was also an accomplished golfer, as was shown by his winning of the championship of Niobrara Country Club.

On June 1, 1986, Walt married Phyllis Murphy Inmon in Lusk.

They made their retirement home in Borrego Springs, Calif. Walt had an intense love for his home state of Wyoming, and looked forward to returning to Lusk in the summertime to share time with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Borrego Springs, Calif.; two sons, John and his wife Maria of Elkton, Md., and Joe of Casper, Wyo.; one daughter, Margylou of Lusk; one sister, Betty Morgan of Lusk; four grandchildren, Jon Michael Fernau, Paige Clausius, Katie Fernau and Kristi Hack; four great-grandchildren, Cody, Baylee and Cooper Hack and Kody Clausius; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his parents, and 12 siblings.
