Shirley Mae Martin, age 72 of Glenwood, Minn., formerly of Shawnee, died Friday, June 16, 2006 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood, Minn. A memorial dinner was held at the Martin home on June 17, and a memorial service will be held at a later time at one of her favorite places, the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Shirley Mae Martin, the daughter of LeRoy Franklin and Beulah Mae (Griffith) Cool, was born July 27, 1933, in Four Corners. She grew up and attended school in Newcastle, Wyo. Shirley was united in marriage to Donald Seldon Martin in Rapid City, South Dakota on Dec. 22, 1949, and they moved to Glenwood, Minn. They later moved to Rock Island, Ill., where Donald and Shirley had their children and began to raise their family. In 1970, they purchased the Shawnee Supply Company in Shawnee, which they operated together for the next 34 years. Shirley was also a substitute postmaster, served as a local election judge and was involved in their community.
Shirley always had a pot of coffee on and enjoyed visiting with many of the people who stopped by the store.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed designing and making quilts and made jewelry with the rocks they would find. Collecting dolls, coins and stamps were among her other interests. Shirley loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, especially during the holidays. In 2004, they sold the store and retired to Glenwood. For over the year, Shirley fought a courageous battle with cancer. Shirley is survived by her husband Donald of Glenwood; children, Donnie and June (Thorvan) Patten of Glenrock, Wyo., Kathleen Martin of Glenwood, Minn., Cynthia (Mel) Ables of Bethany, Okla.; grandchildren, Nicole (Derek) Eager of Glenrock, Angela Fifer of Ypsilanti, Mich. and Karlene Martin of Clio, Mich.; siblings, Betty (Bill) Shults, Martha (Ole) Hokanson and JoAnn (Vern) Hawk all of Newcastle, Darlene Robinson, Gary (Donna) Martin and Steve Martin all of Glenwood and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Donald Martin Jr.; brother, Brian Cool; sisters, Gene Howley, Hazel Hando, Thelma Edwards; and sister-in-law Lorraine VanVickle.
