Archie Huey

Funeral services for Archie Huey will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Rev. Brad Smith will conduct the services.

He passed away Aug. 18, 1990, at the age of 87, at his home in Ridgecrest, Calif., where he and his wife moved in 1986 to be near their son, Bob, and family.

Huey was born Dec. 25, 1902 to Robert James Huey and Margaret Musgrove Huey on a farm near Ogden, Kan. He entered Ogden Grade School at the age of five, graduating from the eighth grade at the age of 13. When World War I was declared, he enlisted in the Kansas National Guard on April 7, 1917, at the age of 14 years, three months, and 12 days. He trained at Fort Sill, Okla., and was shipped to France in the spring of 1918. He served in Company "C," 139th Infantry, 35th division. He saw action at Alsace-Lorrainne Sector; Argonne; St. Mihiel; and Meuse River. He was outside the Metz ready to move in when the armistice was signed. He returned to the United States in 1919, landing at Newport News, Va. He was then discharged from the Army on May 8, 1919 at Fort Riley, Kan.

Huey came to Wyoming in the summer of 1919, having a sister, Mrs. Edwin Pfister, living on a ranch in the Red Bird area. He homesteaded on a section of land near Red Bird that same year. After cowboying on the Jackie Mill and Pfister ranches, he decided to go back to school. He entered the Lusk High School in the fall of 1924, graduating in the spring of 1927. During that time he played football and basketball. He was on the basketball team that won the first trophy for Lusk High School. After graduation he attended Kansas State University in the winter months while working for the Wyoming Highway Department in the summers. He received a degree in engineering.

Huey married Wyoma Rogers in 1935. Together they had two sons, Robert James Huey and William Roy. Archie worked for the Wyoming Highway Department until 1942, when he went to work at Grand Island and Sidney, Neb., as an engineer for the defense plants. In the spring of 1943, he went to Canada as an engineer on the Alaska Highway, supervising the building of airports along the highway. After returning from Canada he worked as an engineer for the State of Wyoming Highway Department as a resident engineer in Evanston. He was transferred to Lusk in February 1952, where he retired in 1968.

He and "Dollie" built the Trail Motel in Lusk in 1954, which they operated until 1975. They also had a small ranch in the Manville area.

Huey was confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in the spring of 1961. He was very active in the church and served the Lord wherever needed.

He served as commander of American Legion Post #4; was president of the Chamber of Commerce; and president of the Niobrara County Hospital Board for 17 years. He also worked with the Boy Scouts and served in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Veterans of World War I. He was a licensed professional engineer and land surveyor of the State of Wyoming.

He was a devoted husband and father and a devoted Christian. His survivors include his wife "Dolly," two sons, Robert James and wife, Kathey, Ridgecrest, Calif.; and William Roy and wife, Ann, Lake Jackson, Texas; five grandchildren, Robert, Jenny, Aaron, James, and Jennifer; one sister, Louise Pfister of Billings, Mont.; five nieces and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

For those who wish, memorials may be sent to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Niobrara County Nursing Home.

Peet Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
