George H. Hillen

George H. Hillen, 82, of Lusk died March 8, 1987. Services were March 11 at the Peet Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Mark Lohr officiating. Burial followed in Lusk Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 4, 1904 in Dangast, Germany, the son of Gesine Mathilda Henrietta and Herman Hinrich Frederich Hillen.

He came to America with a brother, Johann, and two of his uncles, Henry Lange and Henry Spinning, arriving in New York on Aug. 28, 1926. From there they came to Pender, NE, where depression days meant little money for farmers. In 1930 they attempted to operate a small restaurant in Omaha, NE, but this too turned out to be an unprofitable venture.

Mr. Hillen became a U.S. citizen and served in the Army for his adopted country during World War II. After his discharge from the Army, he worked in construction and in 1956 came to Wyoming to work on the Glendo Dam.

Later he moved to Lusk, where he worked as caretaker of the cemetery for many years. He loved flowers and enjoyed keeping the grounds well groomed. He was a hard-working man, always optimistic and cheerful. He loved rocks and not only collected them but used them to decorate his well-kept yard.

His unique rock displays were his hobby and brought the admiration of friends and visitors.

Mr. Hillen married Hildegard Engfer in Berlin on Sept. 27, 1960, and brought her to Lusk, where they have made their home since.

Survivors include his wife Hildegard of Lusk and many friends.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the family.
