Service for Virgil Howard, longtime Sioux County resident, was conducted in Harrison at the United Methodist Church February 4. He died in Crawford at the age of 67 on February 1.
Virgil D. Howard, son of Leonard F. Howard and Grace L. Fox Howard was born September 30, 1907, in Madison County, Iowa.
He grew up in Adair County, Iowa, graduating from Richland High School.
On August 27, 1927, he was married to Marie C. Saylor at Des Moines, Iowa. In the fall of 1929 they moved to Harrison where he was employed on the O. L. Fox ranch. During the 1930's they farmed and ranched at different places in Sioux County.
Two children were born, a daughter, Virgie Marie, born in 1935, who died at birth, and a son, Leonard Joseph, born March 21, 1940.
Virgil Howard was a member of the Harrison Memorial United Methodist Church and was well known around the Sioux County area. He served as a surveyor for the office of the AAA and was a county member of the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service which took him all over the region.
In 1944 the Howards bought the Frank and John Bannan ranch in the Highland community where they maintained their home until his death.
Since 1960 Mr. Howard carried the U.S. mail on the Unitt route. When Okley Edgell retired last spring, the Agate route was merged with the Unitt route.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, one sister, Verla and infant daughter. He is survived by his wife Marie; his son, Leonard; a grandson, Lance; and granddaughter Kelly Jo of Fergus Falls, Minn.; one brother, Leslie (Jim) of Crawford; two sisters, Lucille (Mrs. Carl Engebretsen) and Ellen (Mrs. Harold Skavdahl) both of Harrison.
Memorials may be made to the Sioux County Ambulance Fund, United Methodist Church, Alliance Boys Home and Sioux County Heart Fund.
