Funeral services for John James "Jack" Kane, age 75, of Edgemont, S.D. were held December 28, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chadron, Neb. He passed away December 22.

Mr. Kane was born on December 23, 1917 in Creighton, Neb. to John James and Margaret Louise (Fleming) Kane. His parents moved to the Chadron community in 1922, they later moved to the Edgemont vicinity in 1925.

He received his schooling in various places in both South Dakota and Wyoming as well as the first two years of high school in California. He graduated from Edgemont in 1935.

"Jack's" versatile career included many endeavors. He purchased land near the Wyoming-South Dakota line and at the age of nineteen started building his cattle herd. He subsidized this adventure by earthmoving, hay contracts and farming; using horses at the start and later becoming mechanized.

The need for schooling of the children prompted a move to Edgemont where he and Helen built their home and purchased an implement, LP gas, hardware and appliance business. They kept the farmland for a number of years. He was by nature a builder leaving numerous conservation projects to mark this tenure in and around the Edgemont area and Niobrara County.

He was also active in the Chamber of Commerce, Edgemont School Board, Cub Scouts, Lions Club and board chairman of the Edgemont Memorial Hospital. He was also a volunteer fireman and an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont.
