John Marking Sioux Pioneer, Dies September 4

John Marking of Harrison died Wednesday morning Sept. 4, in the Mesa Vista Sanitorium, Boulder, Colo., at the age of 88.

Born to Anna Fernig and Jacob Marking on December 20, 1879, he was one of ten children. The Jacob Marking family was among the early settlers in Sioux County in the 1880's.

Anna Walker and John Marking were married in Harrison on September 7, 1906.

As a volunteer for service in World War I, he was inducted into the Quartermaster Corps, served on the front lines, and with the U.S. Army of Occupation in Germany after the November 11th Armistice until his honorable discharge on August 11, 1919. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He became a member of the Masonic Lodge on August 6, 1903, and was a charter member of the Masonic Sioux Lodge No. 277 in Harrison and was active in that order until his hospitalization in June 1967

For many years, he was an employee of various village and state services until his retirement from active work.

Survivors include his wife Anna; two daughters, Helen Nelson of Boulder, Colo., and Rose Jeffrey of Ponca, Nebr.; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Frances Wasserburger of Crawford, Nebr., and Mrs. Agnes Andrews of Harrison.

Funeral services were held on September 7 at 2 p.m. in the Methodist Memorial Church in Harrison with the Rev. J. Lee Gorman officiating, followed by Masonic graveside services in the Harrison Cemetery. Music was provided by Mrs. Robert Todd, organist, and by Miss Ann Coffee singing "The Lord's Prayer" and Miss Coffee and Mrs. John Skavadhl singing "The Old Rugged Cross."

Pall bearers were Clarence Schnurr, Clarence Dout, John Federle, Harry Serres Sr., Andrew Serres, and Elmer Pullen. Honorary escorts were V. E. Marsteller, J. A. McClarey, Henry Wasserburger , Luther Koch, Martin Koch, Tress Powell and George Wickersham.

V.F.W. honor guard was Kenneth Taylor, A. F. Partridge, Verne Holtz, Vernon Schaefer, Harold Wilson, Lyle Lewis, Chas. Umphenour, Buster Wickersham and Russell From. Taps were sounded by Miss Julie Mann.
