Gertrude May Milnes

Gertrude May Milnes, 91, mother of Loretta (Mrs. Joe) Jones, Lusk and Izetta (Mrs. Loren) Barr, Jay Em area ranchwoman, died June 22 at the Platte County Hospital Nursing Wing in Wheatland.

Mrs. Milnes was born on Monroe County, Iowa, on Dec. 1, 1888, and was the daughter of John and Alice E. Scott. The family moved by covered wagon to Hope County, Neb. when she was 10 years old. They settled on a farm at Emporia, Neb.

On Feb. 20, 1906, she married Charley Harrison Milnes. He came to Wyoming in 1913 and homesteaded 14 miles north of Fort Laramie. In the spring of 1914, Mrs. Milnes and their four children joined him.

Following her husband's death in 1942, Mrs. Milnes left the family homestead in 1946, and had lived in Guernsey since that time.

Memorial service was last Thursday morning at the Community Presbyterian Church, Guernsey.

The Rev. Don Courville officiated with burial in the Prairie Rest Cemetery in Guernsey. Pallbearers were grandsons, Dr. Robert Barr, Max Jones, Kirk David, Bud Oliver and Mike Schmidt.

A memorial was established to the nursing home wing where she resided.

Survivors are three sons, Orval of Guernsey, John of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Everett of Grass Valley, Calif.; seven daughters, Mrs. Jack Oliver of Fort Laramie , Mrs. Raymond Green and Mrs. Earl Davis, both of Guernsey, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Barr, Mrs. Don Marlatt of Riverton and Mrs. Aloise Kindle of Stayton, Ore. One sister, Mrs. Joe Waggoner of Jay Em; one brother, Charley Scott of Lusk; 35 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
