Ruth Ellen Montgomery

Ruth Montgomery of 1826 Driftwood Lane, N.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died October 19, 2000 at Mercy Hospital of heart failure.

Services were held at the First Congregational church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at 1 p.m. Monday, October 23, with the Reverend Matthew Noffke officiating. Friends and family called at Turner Chapel East on Sunday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Ruth is survived by her loving and kind husband of 60 years, Richard "Hank" Montgomery, two daughters, Kay (Harley) Kunkel, Betty Jo (Dr. David) Hoyt; four grandchildren, Richard Redding, Rhonda (Alfred) Hendrickson, Stephanie (Steve) Smith, and Bradly Hoyt; two step-granddaughters, Hope (The Reverend Donald) Kruse, Julie (Dr. John) Pettine; eight great-grandchildren, Ronnie, Rose, Kyle, Bailey, Morgan, Parker, Kimble, Kassie and Bryce.; seven step-children, Samantha, Nick, Jenny, Jeremiah, and Jireh. Many surrogate grandchildren in the U. S. and in Germany. A sister, Irene Conrad, and a sister-in-law Helen Thomas and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Christine Thomas; brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Grace Thomas; brother, Ralph Thomas; and nephew Charles Stevenson.

She was a member of the First Congregational church in Cedar Rapids and in Lusk, Wyoming for nearly 60 years and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Dorcas Guild, Priscilla Circle, Son Shine Prayer Group, and was also a Deaconess at the church in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of Eastern Star, Niobrara Country Club, a 4-H leader for 20 some years, the Guardian of Job's Daughters, a member of the Homemakers Club, PEO Chapter 1 of Lusk, Wyoming and later Chapter MG in Cedar Rapids, a member of Cattleman's Association for Women (Cowbelles), was a legal secretary for 13 years and worked for Grant Wood Area Education Agency 10 years. She also guided tours at Brucemore.

She was devoted to her husband, children, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her friends were all so very dear to her.

The family extends their appreciation for your love and kindness to her through all the years. She will be missed by all who knew her.
