Mrs. F. W. Nern Dies at Gordon

Mrs. F. W. Nern of Gordon, Nebr., wife of the late F. W. Nern who ran the Kitchen Land and Cattle Co. north of Lance Creek for many years, died February 5, at the age of 91. She was the mother of Mrs. Harry Baker of Hat Creek.

Funeral services were conducted from the Church of God in Gordon with the pastor, the Rev. Carl C. Williams officiating assisted by Melvin Grosenbach. Burial was in the Gordon cemetery.

Mae Martha Hopkins, daughter of James and Mississippi Hopkins, was born July 3, 1871 in Freeman, Mo. On September 9, 1898 she married Felix William Nern of Boswell, Ind., at Sioux City, Ia. They made their home on a ranch at New Castle, Nebr. until 1911 when they moved to a ranch south of Gordon. It was about 1917 that they bought the Kitchen Land and Cattle Co, from Jake Mill later returning to Gordon where they retired in 1945.

Mrs. Nern was baptized at the age of 62 in a lake on the ranch and became an ardent Christian worker. For the past seven years she has been confined to a wheel chair, but continued her personal Christian work by mail and with those who came to visit with her.

Surviving are one son, Lee Meyers, and three daughters, Mrs. Chester Skanadore and Mrs. Orin Slater of Gordon, and Mrs. Baker. There are 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Frank Gwynn died previously.
