Donald Owens died Jan. 22, 2000, at the Poplar Living Center in Casper after a lengthy battle with poor health.

He was born Dec. 10, 1930 at Crawford, Neb. the son of Ray Owens and Viola Wood Cheaney. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1949. He was a superb runner, which made him an avid football player, the sport he loved.

After graduation he worked at various jobs around the Crawford area helping his father on the farm and with the ice business. On Dec 19, 1950, he joined the U.S. Air Force serving in Korea, Iceland, Greenland, Germany and the Philippines. He retired from the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant on Dec. 1, 1970 at Mountain Home, Idaho. He enjoyed visiting with people about his military career and travels.

In 1971 he qualified for Civil Service as a postal employee and retired from the US Postal Service in Maine in 1991.

Donald had a great sense of humor and loved to tease, but he did not like to be teased in return. He loved small children and entertained them well.

He returned to Lusk in 1994 to the open and beautiful country he loved, and to be with his family again.

Donald is survived by two sisters, Lola Dobson of Lusk, and Leatta Fuller of Craig, Colo.; one brother Raymond of Bremerton, Wash.; four children and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and step-mother Pearl, mother and step-father Merle, brother Larry who was killed in Viet Nam in 1969; and one special great- niece Tabitha Johnson in 1992.

A memorial has been established to the Poplar Living Center in Casper.
