Funeral Service For Area Homesteader

Area homesteader and former Lusk resident Clarence Russell "Nig" Patton died at the Torrington Community Hospital May 2. Funeral service was conducted at the Bethel Baptist Church in Torrington last Friday, May 6 with the Rev. Eugene West and the Rev. Vern Ekerholm officiating. Clarence R. Patton was born August 4, 1902, in Riverton, Neb, the son of Thomas and Ella May Huntley Patton. He was educated in the Spring Valley, Neb. schools. He and Alice M. Brown were married November 9, 1921 in Smith Center, Kan.

The couple homesteaded in the Red Bird area near here in 1930 and ranched west of Lusk for a number of years. While living in the area, Patton worked at the C & H Refinery for five years and was an employee of Niobrara County for a number of years. He also operated the Elk Hill Service Station here for five years.

Prior to his retirement in 1964, he was employed for the past 20 years with Lamb Construction. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Torrington.

Patton is survived by his wife Alice of Torrington, one son, Basil Eugene Patton, Hanna and one daughter Mrs. Lawrence (Barbara) Ferris, also of Torrington; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers, one half sister and one great-grandson.

Interment was in Valleyview Cemetery in Torrington. Memorials have been established to the Bethel Baptist Church or to the Patton Scholarship Fund, Eastern Wyoming College, Torrington.
