Rolland Gagstetter

Memorial service for Rolland Gagstetter of California, a former resident of Lusk, was held at Peet Mortuary Chapel Saturday, June 20, with Mark Lohr officiating.

Rolland Samuel Gagstetter, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Gagstetter, was born March 1, 1904, at Sublette, Ill. He died at South Bay Hospital, Redondo Beach, Calif., June 17 at the age of 77.

When Rolland was four years old, the family moved to Phillip, S. D., living there until March of 1910 when they moved to a homestead four miles south of Van Tassell. Rolland attended school and grew to manhood there. On June 1, 1942, he and Helen Hammond were married at the Methodist Church at Harrison. In October, 1942, he and his nephew, Richard Schnorenberg enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific, receiving his discharge in 1945.

The Gagstetters made their home in Lusk until 1950 when they moved to El Segundo, Calif., and later to Redondo Beach where they owned and operated a business.

Minerva Watson was organist at the memorial service. Jim Willson sang, "The Lord's Prayer" and "We Are Going Down The Valley." Active bearers were Julian Phipps, Warren Robertson, Frank Fancher, Otto Vondra, Clarence West and William Immesoete. Honorary bears were all his friends.

Interment was in Lusk Cemetery with military honors by the Elks Lodge. Rolland was a member of the Elks Lodge at Redondo Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Raymond. He is survived by his wife Helen, foster daughter, Debra Stewart and granddaughter Sarah Stewart of Artesia, Calif., a sister Edna Schnorenberg of Lusk, four nieces and five nephews.
