Charles Gaukel & Phyllis Gaukel

The Funeral Liturgy for Charles and Phyllis Gaukel was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church by Msgr. James O'Neill.

Vigil for the Deceased was recited at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at the Bustard Funeral Home. Rite of Committal was conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo, Wyo.

Mr. and Mrs. Gaukel died Sept. 27, 1993 as a result of an automobile accident near Ely, Nev.

Mr. Gaukel, 66, was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Jireh, Wyo., the son of Charles M. and Anna (Defenbaugh) Gaukel. He grew up and attended school in Manville then enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Tokyo. Following his discharge, he returned to Lusk and worked with the U.S. National Guard.

On April 23, 1950, he married Phyllis Anna Klemke in Lusk. Mr. Gaukel then worked for Conoco and moved to Linch, Wyo.

The couple later lived in Thermopolis; Cody; Billings, Mont.; Casper; Connecticut; Singapore and Norway.

They returned to Casper in 1978, and Mr. Gaukel retired form Conoco in 1982.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Mr. Gaukel was a member of the Elks in Cody and was also a member of the Lion's Club in Story, Wyo. and the American Legion in Casper.

Mrs. Gaukel, 64, was born March 15, 1929, in Lusk, the daughter of Henry B. and Anna (Reiman) Klemke. She grew up and was educated in Lusk, graduating from Niobrara County High School in 1947.

She then worked at the hospital in Lusk until her marriage, when she traveled throughout the world with her husband. Mrs. Gaukel was a member of the Alter and Rosary Society and enjoyed arts and crafts.

Both were members of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the couple had homes in Casper and Story.

Survivors of the couple include a son Gerry and a daughter, Terry Morrison, both of Casper and four grandchildren.

In addition, Mr. Gaukel is survived by a brother, Clarence of Denver; four sisters, Anna Nelson and Ruby Simon of Torrington, Margie Patten of Bayfield, Colo., and Marie Sperry of Twin Falls, Idaho. Mrs. Gaukel is also survived by her stepmother, Sophie Klemke of Lusk.

Mr. Gaukel is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Emery and Alan, and a sister, Dorothy Hipsley; his wife is preceded in death by her parents. They are both preceded in death by two grandchildren.
