Services for Mrs. Schiefer held in Newcastle
Funeral services were held last Friday morning at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church at 10:00 in Newcastle for Mrs. Arnold "Shorty" Schiefer who died at St. Johns hospital in Rapid City, April 15 following a massive stroke at her home earlier that afternoon. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.
The Schiefers had just returned home from a trip to visit friends in Rockford, S.D., and he had gone out to the car to get their suitcases. When he came in, she had had the stroke. They rushed her to the hospital in Newcastle and then on to Rapid City where she died shortly after arriving there.
Katherine McMullen was born on July 24, 1913, at Pierre, S.D., to Clarence and Sarah McMullen. She and Arnold "Shorty" Schiefer were married Nov. 15, 1929, at Kadoka, S.D. The family moved to Lusk in 1947 where he was a driver for Safeway Stores, Inc. Mr. and Mrs. Schiefer moved to Newcastle in 1955 where they have since made their home. Mr. Schiefer retired from Safeway in 1969.
She is survived by her husband, Arnold "Shorty" of Newcastle; two sons Clarence Schiefer, Eaton, Colo.; Tom Schiefer, Eagle River, Alaska; one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Shirley) Burt, Lance Creek; two sisters Geraldine Boocock of Pierre, S.D., and Genevieve Giddings, Ft. Pierre, S.D.; three brothers James McMullen, Boulder, Colo., Pat McMullen, Costa Mesa, Calif. and Dick McMullen of Belmar, N.J. and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her parents, two children, two brothers and a sister died previously.
Mrs. Schiefer was a member of the Navy Mothers and the Altar and Rosary Society in Newcastle.
