Last Rites Held For Jack Baker

Last rites for Jack Baker, a former resident of Sioux County, were held at the United Methodist Church in Crawford on August 29, and he was buried in the Crawford Cemetery.

He had died at Atkinson, Nebr., August 27, at the age of 79. He was born in Fairbury, Nebr., October 5, 1888 to Joseph and Louise Baker, the youngest of nine children.

When he was 14, his parents moved to Elsie, Nebr., where he grew to manhood. He homesteaded near New Raymer, Colo., in 1910. In 1921, he was in partnership with Glen Carothers, farming the home place near Elsie

He purchased a ranch near Atkinson in 1924 where he met Gladys Beck. They were married on September 27, 1926. One boy and two girls were born.

In the spring of 1928 they moved to Dawes County farming there until the spring of 1943 when a ranch was bought in Sioux County. Due to ill health, the ranch was sold and he retired from farming. They moved to Crawford in 1950 living at their present home until his death.

Having been an amputee for the past eight years, he spent many hours reading and had read almost every book available at the city library.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys, one son Billy of Colorado Springs, Colo., two daughters, Mrs. Milton Arner (Wilma) of Whitney, and Mrs. Curtis Hageman (Leona) of Oral S. Dak., nine grandchildren, one sister, Edith, Miami, Fla., two brothers, Don, North Platte, and Jeff, Holyoke, Colo.
