Edith Updike

Services for former Lusk resident, Edith Updike, were held Monday, January 17, at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle, Wyo. Pastor Tim Buchanan of Osage Community Bible Church officiated. Burial was in the Newcastle Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Updike died January 10, at Crook County Memorial Hospital in Sundance, Wyo.

She was born in Stockville, Neb. September 9, 1907, to John and Ethel Durham Anstice. At the age of eight, the family moved to their homestead in the Hat Creek, Wyo. area.

She received her elementary education there, graduating from the eighth grade at the Hat Creek School and later from the Lusk High School in 1927.

She attended Chadron State College where she received a teaching certificate and taught at the Christian School and also the Node, Wyo. School.

She married Lester Updike, June 1, 1929 in Lusk, Wyo.

Mrs. Updike taught at the Node, which was a summer school, with her husband being the bus driver. After the term ended, they moved to Osage, Wyo., where they resided until May 1991 when they moved to the Crook County Memorial Nursing Home.

She was a charter member of the Osage Woman's Club and also enjoyed cooking and doing all kinds of fancy work.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1999.

Survivors include her son, Bill of Beaverton, Ore.; sister, and brother-in-law, Bess and Jennings Ruffing of Lusk, Wyo.; two granddaughters, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
