Eleanor Thompson Witzenburger

Eleanor Witzenburger was born in Denver, Colo., the first child of Arthur and Inga Thompson, a cattle ranching family in Niobrara County, Wyo. She graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1940 and began her early teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse and then as second grade teacher in Douglas.

In 1941, Eleanor married Lieutenant Ed Witzenburger in Bakersfield, Calif. They have been married 63 years.

Periodically, during her 30 years as the wife of an Air Force Officer, Eleanor taught in elementary schools in China and Japan. For one period of time she taught in the same school as Pearl Buck had in Nanking, China.

The Witzenburgers' completed their military life in 1970 and returned to Wyoming for sixteen years before moving to Rancho Mirage, Calif., in 1986. Eleanor is survived by her husband, Colonel Ed Witzenburger of Rancho Mirage, her daughter Sandra Asmus of Sheridan, and two sons, Steve of Alice Springs, Australia, and Bruce of San Francisco, Calif.
